Does an IP address have to match exactly to link it to someone who has hacked your email....?
Actually, with NAT routing and other setups that are available, even the same class C doesn't cut it any more. (For example, I am writing this from a hotel right now; probably everyone in the hotel shows up as having the same IP address as I am.)
To prove that the email came from a particular system, you would have to contact the administrators of that IP network for more details. For instance, if we pretend that the IP was 1.2.3.4, then you could look up (by using arin.net for a starting point for North American IP ranges, etc) and tracking down just what provider assigned that address. In my example, perhaps you could narrow it down to say that the hotel I'm in has a DSL line through Windstream Communications. You would have to get Windstream (or BellSouth or RoadRunner or whoever it really is) to look at their usage logs to determine who had been assigned that address at that time. If they pin pointed the hotel, then the hotel would have to be able to figure out it was me; if it is a home user, you could probably figure out which account was logged in, but not necessarily who was sitting at the computer in that house.
Basically, it's a long and annoying process of narrowing it down. You will probably need to get a subpoena for the provider before they release any information about the IP address as well. Unless the police are willing to pursue the issue for some reason, I doubt you will ever "know" who sent you that email to a high degree of accuracy.
Perhaps a better question is, what exactly makes you think your email was hacked, and how? Perhaps you can get the police involved with an interesting enough answer to that question.

When I trying to sign in, it shows that another party already signed in, and I have to automaticaly sign out! What happend? Anyone already get into my email? How can I trace back?

Someone hacked into yahoo server and invaded my private emails. Then they selected a few emails, downloaded them, printed them out, and sent the private material to my estranged wife by Federal Express. How someone did that I don't know because know one knows my password. They are trying to use my private emails to incriminate me or harass my estranged wife. That is a violation of thelaw.

i dunno why but i think someone hacked my account because when i tryed to log in to my (now old) email account i typed the same password as usual and i never changed it and like i thought i just misstyped so i typed it again and again and again and every DAMN TIME IT WAS WRONG.

Reply:unfortunetely, every time you sign in...below it, asks if you have forgotten your password, which makes it easy for someone to click on forgot password and it will give them a temporary password..some emails ask security ?'s to try and keep this locked, but if it is someone that knows you very well...it can be done. all i can say is if you find an email that ask security questions...answer them differently and maybe write down your answers some where safe....good luck

So, you'll need to find out his email account user name. Yahoo typically use the name proceeding the @yahoo.com. Now to figure his password. Well do you know any pass words of his? try them. Try using his fav group, or fav name. Try that. Oh by the way, it is a federal crime to open someones mail, email or other wise. If your e-mail got hacked and deleted, MySpace cannot be blamed for that as it is a poor standard of security either on your part (for revealing your e-mail password) or on the part of your e-mail provider. I don't see how this affects your ability to log into MySpace as your MySpace log in details are safely stored on the MySpace database and provided the two parts of the login agree with what is on the MySpace database, you will be allowed to log on normally (and change your e-mail/password if you wish).
I apologize if I am wrong in this case, but I am beginning to wonder if some people on Yahoo! Answers falsely claim to have been hacked and unable to access their MySpace simply to get information about any "back door" that might be available to access a MySpace.
I say this because these questions pertaining to phished MySpace or missing log in details are coming up so often with the askers seeing information about "hacking into their own MySpace".
I am now very sceptical about any question seeking info about getting into a MySpace other than by normal means

If someone tries over a multiple times to figure out your password, their ip will be held in the firewall for you to look at later. Otherwise I cannot think of any other way.

My fiances email accounts password has been changed many times by someone else. Also all the information in the folders in the email have been deleted. At this point it will no longer allow us to go through the security questions and reset the password. The is also happening with her ebay account. Someone has gotten in and keeps changing the password. They have also been writing messages to the sellers of the items shes bidding on and the person is retracking her bids. We having Ebay monitoring the account but im not sure theres any good doing this. What I dont understand is how someone can go through her security questions over and over again and reset the password. We have made the passwords extremely long. We have also changed the security answers, but still they get in.

It's too long to explain here why they do it, I just did in another post, just make sure you report it to ebay and get your account back as the problems would come later on, that's for sure.

My fiances email accounts password has been changed many times by someone else. Also all the information in the folders in the email have been deleted. At this point it will no longer allow us to go through the security questions and reset the password. The is also happening with her ebay account. Someone has gotten in and keeps changing the password. They have also been writing messages to the sellers of the items shes bidding on and the person is retracking her bids. We having Ebay monitoring the account but im not sure theres any good doing this. What I dont understand is how someone can go through her security questions over and over again and reset the password. We have made the passwords extremely long. We have also changed the security answers, but still they get in.
To anyone who knows about this stuff how exactly can one still be able to do this? What can I do about it? Is there a way I can find out who is doing this, if so what can be done to the person(s)?

Reply:Spammers use valid e-mail addresses to hide their own location. Sounds like a spammer is abusing yours. Nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.
But if they're in your Sent items it's also possible you've been infected with a virus sent via MSN messenger. Scan your computer using an online virusscanner.

It may be a v irus on your computer, but typically spam mail viruses use their own SMTP engine and don't leave a trace in your Sent Mail.
Run a complete virus/trojan scan of your machine to be sure.
First download the following (if the virus is blocking your internet, you may have to download these on another machine and burn to CD or copy to a USB memory stick)

Now, start the machine in Safe Mode (hit the F8 function key as the machine boots up, and choose Safe mode)
Turn off System Restore on your machine, but only until you get this fixed - many of these trojans get copied into the System Restore files, which anti-virus programs aren't allowed to touch and the viruses could reinstall themselves from there. My Computer %26gt; Properties %26gt; System Restore.
Then run Malwarebytes, and clean everything it says
Then run CCleaner
Then run Avast - If a virus infection is persistent, use Avast to do a boot-scan - click on "schedule boot-scan" and restart the computer
Then run Superantispyware
Then turn System Restore back on.
Now install the antivirus program and antispyware program of your choice to do continuous scanning, and make sure you keep it up to date.
Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date - frequent patches are released to plug security holes.

Now go to Knoppix.net and get the latest Knoppix CD, and burn as an image. Use an uninfected computer to do this. It is unlikely that an infected machine can alter CD .iso files, but then one never knows.
Beg/borrow/steal a USB hard disk of sufficient size. Attach it to your computer while it is off.
Boot from the Knoppix disk. Copy the data you want to save (my documents, etc) to the USB disk.
Format the computer's hard drive. Reinstall your operating system and software.
Copy your data back to the computer from the USB drive.
To the other posters in this thread:
There is no "cleaning" up of computers anymore. It's the ultimate waste of time and sanity. The last one I "cleaned" at the customer's insistence took 3 days for the software to chew its way through the bits of evil on the disk. Even then I couldn't be sure I got everything. Actually, I'm pretty sure now that I missed something that the tools couldn't get. I wasted my time and I didn't do what was best for my customer. I swore that I'd never /ever/ do it again if I had a choice.
So if you are recommending cleaning tools, you are recommending an inadequate solution, especially since much of malware these days is designed to avoid most of the popular cleaning tools out there. This is doubly true of rootkits that are leveraged by viruses and trojans.
All it takes is one.
The best solution is prophylactic, like having ghost images and tools like Faronics' Deep Freeze. It's either that or eschew Windows altogether, which I have done for the past 12 years and don't miss.

Reply:First of all, after using the tips below, change your email password, and switch to mozilla firefox.
And if you have a virus, Do not fear, kaspersky has an online-scanner which is completely free and it entirely Browser-Based. The only problem with it is that any threats it finds you must delete them manually, however its not a problem as it gives you the location of the viruses. This can be found at http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner, and then click the top button for a full system scan.
If that finds only some of the viruses and you delete them but are still not happy, then run NOD32 online scan completely free also. This can be found at http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
Kaspersky and NOD32 are your best bet for anti-virus software, and i would strongly suggest you use Kaspersky Internet Security 09, and then online NOD32 scanner as a second-opinion (If you need it which is very unlikely).
These scans can take a very long time, but other things can be done while scanning, so not to worry.
On top of that, me and my team suggest you download MalwareBytes anti-malware and SuperAntiSpyware, and run a full scan with both seperately (Not at the same time).
Your infection should now be gone.

It may be a v irus on your computer, but typically spam mail viruses use their own SMTP engine and don't leave a trace in your Sent Mail.
Run a complete virus/trojan scan of your machine to be sure.
First download the following (if the virus is blocking your internet, you may have to download these on another machine and burn to CD or copy to a USB memory stick)

Now, start the machine in Safe Mode (hit the F8 function key as the machine boots up, and choose Safe mode)
Turn off System Restore on your machine, but only until you get this fixed - many of these trojans get copied into the System Restore files, which anti-virus programs aren't allowed to touch and the viruses could reinstall themselves from there. My Computer %26gt; Properties %26gt; System Restore.
Then run Malwarebytes, and clean everything it says
Then run CCleaner
Then run Avast - If a virus infection is persistent, use Avast to do a boot-scan - click on "schedule boot-scan" and restart the computer
Then run Superantispyware
Then turn System Restore back on.
Now install the antivirus program and antispyware program of your choice to do continuous scanning, and make sure you keep it up to date.
Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date - frequent patches are released to plug security holes.

You're infected. No doubt about it. First of all, disconnect the computer from the network to stop polluting the net with the infection that the computer has acquired.
Secondly, you need to wipe to the bare metal and rebuild.

Now go to Knoppix.net and get the latest Knoppix CD, and burn as an image. Use an uninfected computer to do this. It is unlikely that an infected machine can alter CD .iso files, but then one never knows.
Beg/borrow/steal a USB hard disk of sufficient size. Attach it to your computer while it is off.
Boot from the Knoppix disk. Copy the data you want to save (my documents, etc) to the USB disk.
Format the computer's hard drive. Reinstall your operating system and software.
Copy your data back to the computer from the USB drive.

There is no "cleaning" up of computers anymore. It's the ultimate waste of time and sanity. The last one I "cleaned" at the customer's insistence took 3 days for the software to chew its way through the bits of evil on the disk. Even then I couldn't be sure I got everything. Actually, I'm pretty sure now that I missed something that the tools couldn't get. I wasted my time and I didn't do what was best for my customer. I swore that I'd never /ever/ do it again if I had a choice.
So if you are recommending cleaning tools, you are recommending an inadequate solution, especially since much of malware these days is designed to avoid most of the popular cleaning tools out there. This is doubly true of rootkits that are leveraged by viruses and trojans.
All it takes is one.
The best solution is prophylactic, like having ghost images and tools like Faronics' Deep Freeze. It's either that or eschew Windows altogether, which I have done for the past 12 years and don't miss.

And if you have a virus, Do not fear, kaspersky has an online-scanner which is completely free and it entirely Browser-Based. The only problem with it is that any threats it finds you must delete them manually, however its not a problem as it gives you the location of the viruses. This can be found at http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner, and then click the top button for a full system scan.
If that finds only some of the viruses and you delete them but are still not happy, then run NOD32 online scan completely free also. This can be found at http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
Kaspersky and NOD32 are your best bet for anti-virus software, and i would strongly suggest you use Kaspersky Internet Security 09, and then online NOD32 scanner as a second-opinion (If you need it which is very unlikely).
These scans can take a very long time, but other things can be done while scanning, so not to worry.
On top of that, me and my team suggest you download MalwareBytes anti-malware and SuperAntiSpyware, and run a full scan with both seperately (Not at the same time).
Your infection should now be gone.

A very good friend of mine recently was the victim of email hacking. The hacker hacked 2 of my friends email accounts(1 AOL, and 1 Yahoo).
On the AOL account, he sent out a email to everyone on my friends buddy list saying my friend was gay, and a photo of a naked guy was in the email too.
On the Yahoo account, the hacker has hacked it numerous times and deleted the Flickr account associated with that Yahoo account, but nothing else was done
My friend who was hacked think it is a friend of ours who did it. My friend says he has proof that our friend did it since he has copies of the IP address used, but thats for the Yahoo account only. We dont have any proof yet that he hacked the AOL account. We are attempting to get that proof now.

I know this is crazy to ask this..however, my 10 yr old email has been hacked by some dumba** in Nigeria and sending emails to all of my address book that I'm stuck in Africa and I need $1450 to get back to the US. I've tried contacting yahoo and I've tried to remember my security question and can't. So there's no other way for me to get my email back unless I find a software that I can use on my Mac to hack into my old email.. I can't find anything out there compatible..Only for windows and PCs. my father lately is experiencing problems with his yahoo account. periodically, his passwords get changed such that he cannot log in with the password he had set and when he retrieves a new password and logs in, he notices that all his mails in his inbox, sent folder, spam and trash folders are deleted. its like almost having a new account. I am guessing someone hsomehow is hacking his account repeatedly. Is there any way to find out who does it or why is it happening and more importantly a way to prevent this from happening?

It is also a good idea to incorporate capital and small letters instead of merely using all caps or all small letters. This increases the number of combinations that a hacker would need to decipher, lowering his or her chances to access your account. With regards to your password retrieval, do not use actual information. Instead, provide information that you would be able to remember yet something that is unrelated to you since the first few tries of a hacker will be to use accurate and actual information regarding you to retrieve your password.
Do not leave important emails in your mailbox :
The moment you receive a confirmation letter from a website where you have signed up, print out the information or write it down on a notepad and delete the email immediately. This would ensure that no personal information would be derived directly from your email whether by a hacker or a close friend.
Change password regularly :
Make sure that you change your passwords and answers to retrieve your password information on a regular basis. This is to ensure that by the time that a hacker has been able to decipher your old password you are now using a different password which would then cause them to go back to square one. This is particularly important if you have allowed someone to access your email or other account with your permission to prevent the possibility of them accessing your accounts without your consent in the future.

Conspiracy Theory: Palins Email Hacked?
This is strictly for fun.
This is not about the fact that hacking email is illegal (we all know it is)
nor is it about how her privacy was violated (ethically it was, no matter if you think it was partially justified).
So last night I was reading about all this and found a chat thread were a few people were ticked because the know the conspiracy theory people will immediately blame the DNC camp and Obama.
Others pointed out that while that was an easy conclusion to reach, it was really too simple an answer given that only the most useless information from the account got publicly posted (seeded across) on the web. That a more interesting assumption was that Karl Rowe had it done so he can spin it into a sort of watergate issue and make people sympathize with the victim, i.e. Palin.
As I'm going to sleep though a beautiful theory occurs to me. What if this is Carleton Fiorina paying back Sarah Palin for cutting her off from the main campaign? That's a great motive for someone who probably has the skills to do it in an untraceable way. Plus it has the added benefit of them almost certainly turning back to Carly for advise on how to toughen up their PC security to prevent another hacking!
